Velvet Spider – Gandanameno sp. (Slings) are the juvenile form of a fascinating and visually striking African velvet spider species. Native to southern Africa, these spiders are known for their rich, velvety exoskeleton and distinctive, deep coloration that gives them a luxurious, almost plush appearance.

The slings (juveniles) are small, delicate, and slow-growing, making them perfect for enthusiasts interested in observing the early stages of development. Despite their size, they already display the characteristic velvety sheen and dark, muted tones that intensify as they mature. They are ground-dwelling and tend to stay close to their retreat or burrow, making a secure, well-ventilated enclosure essential.

In captivity, Gandanameno slings thrive in a substrate that allows burrowing, such as a mix of coconut fiber, sand, or soil, kept slightly moist to mimic their natural environment. Feeding typically consists of tiny live insects, such as pinhead crickets or flightless fruit flies, provided in small amounts to suit their size.
