Treptogonostreptus intricatus, commonly known as the Matt Black Millipede, is a striking species recognised for its deep matte-black colouration and impressive size. These millipedes are calm, hardy, and make an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced invertebrate keepers.
Enclosure
A secure, well-ventilated enclosure is essential. A small group can be comfortably housed in a plastic or glass terrarium with a tight-fitting lid. Ensure there is adequate airflow while maintaining humidity.
Substrate
Provide a deep substrate layer of at least 10–15 cm, allowing the millipedes to burrow naturally. A high-quality mix should include:
Decaying hardwood leaf litter
Rotten wood
Organic topsoil or compost
Sphagnum moss (optional for moisture retention)
Leaf litter and decayed wood are not only part of the habitat but also an essential food source.
Temperature
Maintain temperatures between 22–26°C. They can tolerate slightly cooler conditions, but stable warmth promotes activity and growth.
Humidity
These millipedes require moderate to high humidity (70–80%). Keep the substrate slightly damp but not waterlogged by misting regularly.
Diet
Treptogonostreptus intricatus are primarily detritivores, feeding on decomposing organic material. Supplement their diet with:
Leaf litter
Decayed hardwood
Vegetables such as cucumber, courgette, carrot, and sweet potato
Occasional fruit treats
Remove uneaten fresh food within 24–48 hours to prevent mould.
