Troglodillo “Green Spot” Isopods

🟢 Troglodillo Green Spot

A seriously unusual and eye-catching isopod for collectors looking for something a little different! Troglodillo “Green Spot” are named for the distinctive green spotting and markings that make these isopods stand out beautifully against their darker body colour.

These are a fantastic addition to a more experienced isopod collection and are particularly appealing to keepers who enjoy unusual and less commonly available species.

As with many uncommon isopods, they can take a little patience while a colony establishes, but watching the colony grow and develop is part of the fun!

🏡 Care Requirements

Difficulty: Intermediate

Humidity: Moderate–high

Temperature: Approximately 20–25°C

Ventilation: Good ventilation with areas of higher humidity

Substrate: A deep, moisture-retentive natural substrate

Diet: Leaf litter, decaying hardwood and supplemental foods

Calcium: Always provide a constant calcium source

🌿 Substrate

Provide a deep, organic-rich substrate containing materials such as decayed hardwood, leaf litter, organic soil/compost and rotten wood.

A generous layer of dried leaves should always be available on the surface. Leaf litter provides both food and cover and is particularly important for maintaining a healthy, naturalistic enclosure.

💧 Humidity & Moisture

Keep the enclosure moist but never waterlogged. It is beneficial to maintain a moisture gradient, allowing the isopods to choose the conditions they prefer.

Lightly mist one area of the enclosure when required while allowing another area to remain slightly drier. Avoid allowing the entire enclosure to become saturated, as stagnant, overly wet conditions can lead to problems.

🍂 Feeding

Troglodillo Green Spot should have plenty of decaying leaf litter and rotting hardwood available at all times.

You can supplement their diet with small amounts of foods such as:

• Fish flakes

• Isopod/invertebrate protein foods

• Vegetables

• Dried foods

• Bee pollen

Remove uneaten fresh food before it begins to spoil.

🦴 Calcium

Calcium is essential for healthy growth and successful moulting. Provide a constant source such as cuttlebone, calcium carbonate or crushed eggshell.

🪵 Hides & Enrichment

Provide plenty of natural hiding places using cork bark, pieces of rotten wood, leaf litter and other suitable botanicals. A cluttered enclosure gives the colony plenty of areas to hide, feed and reproduce.

🥚 Breeding

Once established and kept under suitable conditions, a healthy colony should reproduce. Give them time to settle and avoid excessive disturbance, particularly when the colony is small.

As with many isopods, maintaining stable conditions and providing plenty of food, calcium and hiding places is key to encouraging breeding.

⚠️ Important

Troglodillo Green Spot are best suited to keepers who are prepared to give an uncommon species the time and stable environment it needs to establish. Avoid constantly changing the enclosure conditions or disturbing the colony unnecessarily.

Please note: Isopod husbandry information can vary between species and individual colonies. Monitor your animals and adjust moisture, ventilation and feeding according to their behaviour and condition.
