Trachelipus trilobatus “Trilobite” is a visually striking and unique species of isopod, celebrated for its distinctive body shape that resembles ancient trilobites. Native to parts of Europe, this species has a flattened, elongated body with pronounced segmentation, giving it a sculpted, prehistoric appearance that makes it stand out in any collection.
Adults of Trachelipus trilobatus “Trilobite” display a muted brown to grey coloration, often with subtle shading along the segments that accentuates their trilobite-like form. Their flattened body allows them to easily navigate under bark, stones, and leaf litter, making them excellent explorers and shelter-seekers in their enclosure.
In captivity, this isopod thrives in a well-ventilated setup with a stable moisture gradient. One side of the enclosure should remain consistently moist to support hydration and molting, while the other side stays relatively dry. A substrate rich in leaf litter, decomposing wood, and calcium sources such as cuttlebone or limestone helps maintain healthy exoskeletons and supports overall colony growth.
