Porcellio succinctus “Black Rib” is a striking and distinctive morph of Porcellio succinctus, admired for its bold contrast and textured appearance. This variety is named for the dark, prominent ridges running along each body segment, which create a dramatic “ribbed” look across the isopod’s back.
Adults develop a sturdy, elongated body typical of the Porcellio genus, with clearly defined segmentation and a slightly rugged exoskeleton. The “Black Rib” form usually displays a darker base coloration with deep black or charcoal ridges, sometimes contrasted by lighter tones along the sides or between the segments. This unique patterning gives the isopod a very bold and sculpted appearance compared to more uniform species.
In captivity, Porcellio succinctus “Black Rib” prefers a well-ventilated enclosure with a clear moisture gradient. While one area of the enclosure should remain consistently moist for hydration and molting, most of the habitat should stay on the drier side to mimic the species’ natural preferences. A substrate rich in leaf litter, decaying hardwood, and calcium sources such as cuttlebone or limestone is essential for healthy growth.
