Lucihormetica verrucosa, commonly known as the Verrucosa Cockroach, is a rare and fascinating species renowned for its unusual appearance and nocturnal behavior. Native to Central and South America, this cockroach is especially prized among exotic insect keepers for its glossy, dark exoskeleton and unique raised tubercles that give it a “warty” texture—hence the species name verrucosa.
Adults have a robust, oval body that is primarily dark brown to black, often with subtle iridescent highlights under light. The textured exoskeleton not only gives them a distinctive look but also helps them blend into leaf litter and forest debris in their natural habitat. While not fast-moving like some cockroach species, Lucihormetica verrucosa is an active explorer at night, making them fascinating to observe in a bioactive or naturalistic enclosure.
In captivity, these cockroaches thrive in a warm, humid environment with plenty of hiding spots. A substrate of coconut fiber, leaf litter, or decomposing wood helps maintain humidity and provides a place to burrow. They benefit from a diet of fruits, vegetables, and protein sources such as fish flakes or small amounts of cooked egg. Maintaining proper humidity is key, as they originate from tropical forest floors.
