The False Death’s Head Cockroach is a hardy and fast-breeding species popular among reptile keepers and invertebrate enthusiasts. Native to tropical regions of Central and South America, this species is well known for its reliability as a feeder insect and its easy care requirements. Despite the name, it only resembles the famous death’s head marking and is a completely different species.
Blaberus discoidalis grows to around 4–6 cm (1.5–2.5 inches) as adults and produces large, active nymphs that make excellent food for reptiles, amphibians, tarantulas, and other insectivores. They are non-climbing, non-flying, and do not infest homes, making them one of the most convenient feeder cockroaches to keep.
This species thrives in warm, well-ventilated enclosures with egg cartons for hiding space and a diet of fruits, vegetables, and dry insect food. With proper care, colonies reproduce quickly and provide a steady supply of nutritious feeders.
