Black Fire Millipede

The Black Fire Millipede is a striking and dramatic species known for its deep black body contrasted with fiery red or orange highlights. This bold coloration gives the millipede its “fire” name and makes it an eye-catching inhabitant in any naturalistic or bioactive enclosure. The glossy black segments paired with vibrant legs or segment edges create a vivid appearance as the millipede moves through its environment.

Adults develop the classic cylindrical millipede shape with dozens of tiny legs that move in smooth, wave-like motions. Their sturdy bodies and strong coloration make them particularly impressive when fully grown, and they are often active during the evening as they explore the enclosure or forage for food.

In captivity, Black Fire Millipedes thrive in warm, humid conditions with a deep, nutrient-rich substrate. A mixture of organic soil, decomposing hardwood, and leaf litter is ideal, as much of their diet comes from breaking down decaying plant matter within the substrate. Providing plenty of leaf litter and rotting wood is essential, while occasional vegetables can be offered as a supplemental food source.
