Assassin Mimic Cockroaches are a fascinating species known for their unusual appearance and behaviour. They are named for their resemblance to assassin bugs, which helps them avoid predators in the wild. Their long legs and alert posture make them very different from most common cockroach species.
They are a hardy species and relatively easy to keep, making them a great choice for anyone interested in unusual invertebrates.
Difficulty
Easy to Moderate
Assassin Mimic Cockroaches are fairly hardy and adaptable as long as they are kept warm and provided with the correct humidity and food.
Temperature
I keep mine between 24–28°C.
They prefer warm conditions and tend to be more active at higher temperatures.
Humidity
Moderate humidity works best.
I keep part of the enclosure slightly moist while leaving other areas drier so they can choose where they are most comfortable.
Enclosure
A well-ventilated plastic tub or glass enclosure works well.
These cockroaches are active and like space to move around, so I recommend giving them a reasonable amount of floor space rather than a tall enclosure.
Make sure the enclosure has good ventilation, as stagnant air can cause problems.
Substrate
A natural substrate helps maintain humidity and provides a more natural environment.
A simple mix works well such as:
Organic soil
Coconut fibre
Leaf litter
Keeping the substrate slightly damp in one area helps maintain humidity.
Hides and Enrichment
Providing hiding spots will help them feel secure.
Good options include:
Cork bark
Pieces of wood
Leaf litter
They will often hide during the day and become more active in the evening.
Diet
Assassin Mimic Cockroaches are omnivorous scavengers and will eat a wide range of foods.
I feed mine a varied diet including:
Fresh vegetables
Fruit
Fish flakes or dried shrimp for protein
Leaf litter
Removing uneaten fresh food after a day or two helps keep the enclosure clean.
