Armadillidium “Slano Clown” is a colorful and highly sought-after locality of Armadillidium known for its playful, high-contrast patterning. The name “Clown” comes from the bold mix of dark body coloration with scattered patches and markings of yellow, cream, or orange that create a bright, spotted appearance across the segments.
Originating from the Slano region of Croatia, Armadillidium “Slano Clown” displays the classic rounded body shape typical of the genus. When threatened, these isopods are capable of conglobation—rolling into a tight protective ball. The irregular speckling and vibrant accents often become more pronounced as the isopods mature, making adult individuals particularly eye-catching in naturalistic setups.
In captivity, Armadillidium “Slano Clown” does best in a well-ventilated enclosure with moderate humidity and a stable moisture gradient. One side of the enclosure should remain consistently damp while the rest stays relatively dry. A substrate rich in leaf litter, decomposing wood, and calcium sources such as cuttlebone or limestone is important for proper nutrition and healthy molting.
