Armadillidium ruffoi is a fascinating and relatively uncommon species of pill isopod prized by collectors for its neat appearance and classic rolling behavior. Like other members of the Armadillidium genus, this species is capable of conglobation—rolling into a tight ball when disturbed—making it both charming and well-protected in the wild.
Native to parts of southern Europe, Armadillidium ruffoi typically displays a smooth, rounded body with subtle texture across its segments. Their coloration is usually shades of grey to dark slate, sometimes with faint patterning or lighter edges along the segments. While they may appear simple at first glance, their clean look and symmetrical shape make them very attractive in naturalistic enclosures.
In captivity, Armadillidium ruffoi does best in a well-balanced setup with moderate humidity and good airflow. A moisture gradient is recommended, allowing one side of the enclosure to remain consistently damp while the other side stays drier. A substrate rich in leaf litter, decomposing wood, and calcium sources such as cuttlebone or limestone helps support healthy growth and molting.
These isopods are generally calm and spend much of their time hiding beneath cork bark, stones, and leaf litter. They feed primarily on decaying plant material but will also benefit from occasional vegetable scraps and small protein supplements to support colony growth
