Armadillidium peraccae is a beautiful and hardy species of isopod that is well loved by hobbyists for its subtle coloration and classic “pill bug” behavior. Native to parts of southern Europe, this species features a smooth, rounded body with tones that typically range from soft grey to brown, often with delicate patterning that gives them a natural, earthy appearance.
Like other members of the Armadillidium genus, Armadillidium peraccae has the ability to roll into a tight ball when disturbed, a defense behavior known as conglobation. This trait, combined with their calm temperament, makes them a fascinating and beginner-friendly species to observe.
These isopods thrive in environments with moderate humidity, good ventilation, and plenty of natural materials such as leaf litter, cork bark, and decaying wood. They play an important role as decomposers, breaking down organic matter and helping maintain a healthy, balanced micro-ecosystem in bioactive enclosures.
