Armadillidium maculatum “Chocolate Zebra” is a beautiful and unique variation of the popular Zebra isopod, prized for its rich brown tones and striking striped pattern. Instead of the classic black and white contrast, this morph displays deep chocolate-brown bands paired with lighter cream or tan stripes, creating a warm and eye-catching look that stands out in any isopod enclosure.
Like other Armadillidium maculatum varieties, the Chocolate Zebra is known for its hardy nature and active behavior. These isopods are frequently seen exploring their environment, grazing on leaf litter and organic material. When disturbed, they can roll into a tight ball, a defense behavior typical of the Armadillidium genus that makes them fascinating to observe.
They thrive in setups with moderate humidity, good airflow, and plenty of natural materials such as leaf litter, cork bark, and decaying wood. These elements provide shelter and a steady food source while allowing them to display natural behaviors. As excellent decomposers, they help break down organic waste and contribute to maintaining a healthy bioactive ecosystem.
