Armadillidium maculatum “Black & White Zebra” is one of the most striking and recognizable isopods in the hobby. Famous for its bold zebra-like pattern, this species features alternating black and white bands across its body, giving it a unique, high-contrast appearance that instantly stands out in any enclosure.
Native to southern Europe, Armadillidium maculatum is a hardy and active species that adapts well to a variety of terrarium setups. Like other members of the Armadillidium genus, these isopods are capable of rolling into a tight ball when disturbed, a behavior known as conglobation, which makes them both fascinating and fun to observe.
They thrive in environments with moderate humidity, good ventilation, and plenty of natural materials such as leaf litter, cork bark, and decaying wood. These elements provide essential hiding spots and a continuous food source. As natural decomposers, they help break down organic matter and contribute to maintaining a healthy, balanced bioactive ecosystem.
