Armadillidium gestroi “Milky Way” is a stunning and highly sought-after morph of Armadillidium gestroi, known for its dark base color scattered with bright white speckling. The contrast between the deep charcoal or black body and the star-like white markings gives this isopod its fitting “Milky Way” name, resembling a starry night sky across its armored segments.
Like other members of the Armadillidium genus, A. gestroi “Milky Way” is capable of conglobation, rolling into a tight ball when disturbed. Adults develop a smooth, rounded body with clearly defined segmentation, and the unique speckled pattern tends to become more pronounced as the isopods mature.
In captivity, Armadillidium gestroi “Milky Way” prefers a well-ventilated enclosure with moderate humidity and a stable moisture gradient. One area of the enclosure should remain consistently moist for hydration and molting, while the rest stays relatively dry. A substrate rich in leaf litter, decomposing hardwood, and calcium sources such as limestone or cuttlebone will help support healthy growth and exoskeleton development.
