Care Level
Intermediate
Size
Up to 1.5–2 cm
Temperature
Ideal temperature range is 20–26°C. Avoid temperatures dropping below 18°C for extended periods.
Humidity
Ardentiella sp. “Red Diablo” prefer moderate to high humidity, but like most isopods they benefit from a moisture gradient within the enclosure.
One side of the enclosure should remain damp with sphagnum moss, while the opposite side stays slightly drier.
Enclosure
These isopods thrive in a well-ventilated plastic or glass enclosure. Good airflow is important to prevent stagnant conditions while still maintaining humidity.
Provide plenty of hiding spaces such as:
Cork bark
Leaf litter
Pieces of decaying hardwood
Substrate
A deep, nutrient-rich substrate is essential. A good mix should include:
Organic topsoil
Decayed hardwood
Crushed leaf litter
Flake soil (optional but beneficial)
Sphagnum moss
A 5–8 cm deep substrate layer works well for this species.
Diet
Ardentiella sp. “Red Diablo” are detritivores, feeding mainly on decomposing organic material. Their diet should consist of:
Leaf litter (a staple food source)
Decayed wood
Vegetables such as courgette, carrot, cucumber, and squash
Occasional protein sources such as fish flakes, dried shrimp, or cuttlebone
Cuttlebone or calcium sources are recommended to support healthy moulting.
